Homegrown Tourism: Managing the Shift from International to Domestic Visitors As global travel continues to recover from the pandemic, states are observing a lasting shift in tourism patterns: fewer international visitors and a sharp rise in domestic travel. Studies forecast an overall decline of 8.2 percent in international arrivals to the United States, but growth from several countries in South America and the Far East. The economic impact on American destinations is significant, with estimates of more than $12 billion in lost visitor spending in 2024. This trend is reshaping state tourism strategies and prompting investments that focus on local and regional visitors.
